Both forms are prepared from the leaves of a plant, &lt;span&gt;Cannabis&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class=&quot;hovertip&quot;&gt;Um termo genérico usado para denotar os vários preparados da planta de maconha (cânhamo), Cannabis sativa. Isso inclui a folha de maconha ou diamba (com variada sinonímia de gíria), o cânhamo-da-índia ou haxixe (derivado da resina dos extremos floridos da planta) e o óleo de haxixe.Na Convenção Única de Narcóticos e Drogas de 1961, a  maconha foi definida como “as extremidades floridas ou frutificadas da planta de cannabis (excluindo as sementes e as folhas sem aquelas extremidades) das quais a resina não foi extraída”, enquanto que a resina da cânabis é “a resina bruta ou purificada, extraída da planta da cannabis”. As definições são baseadas na terminologia tradicional indiana como ganja (= cânabis) e charas (= resina). Um terceiro termo indiano, o bhang  se refere às folhas. O óleo de cânabis (óleo de haxixe, cânabis líquida ou haxixe líquido) é um concentrado de cânabis obtido pela extração geralmente através de um óleo vegetal.O termo marijuana é de origem mexicana. Originalmente um termo usado para o tabaco barato (ocasionalmente misturado com cânabis), tornou-se um termo genérico para as folhas de cânabis ou a cânabis em geral, em muitos países. O haxixe, inicialmente um termo utilizado para a cânabis nas áreas do Mediterrâneo oriental, é hoje utilizada para a resina da cânabis.A cânabis contém pelo menos 60 canabinóides, muitos dos quais biologicamente ativos. O componente mais ativo é o delta 9-tetrahidro­canabinol (THC), o qual pode ser detectado na urina várias semanas após seu uso (geralmente após ter sido fumado), bem como seus metabólitos.A intoxicação pela cânabis produz sensação de euforia, leveza dos membros e geralmente retração social. Prejudica a capacidade para dirigir veículos bem como para executar outras atividades complexas que requerem habilidade; prejudica a memória imediata, o nível de atenção, o tempo de reação, a capacidade de aprendizado, a coordenação motora, a percepção de profundidade, a visão peri­férica, a percepção do tempo (a pessoa geralmente tem a sensação de passagem mais lenta do tempo) e a detecção de sinais. Outros sinais de intoxicação podem incluir ansiedade excessiva, desconfiança ou idéias paranóides em alguns e euforia ou apatia em outros, juízo crítico prejudicado, irritação conjuntival, aumento de apetite, boca seca e taquicardia. A cânabis às vezes é consumida com álcool, o que aumenta os efeitos psicomotores.Há registros de que, em casos de esquizofrenia, o uso da cânabis pode precipitar recaídas. Estados de ansiedade e de pânico agudos, e estados delirantes foram também relatados na intoxicação por cânabis; estes geralmente regridem em alguns dias.
